postcard from the theatre

Last night we went to a small and pretty old theatre in Fortitude Valley to see my partners niece.

Lisa and a couple of friends have written and produced a comedy piece that's a little over an hour long. It's A Girls Guide to Being a Wingman , and it's really funny. All 3 of them sing well and the writing shows a wicked (and adult) sense of humour.

The New Globe Theatre is 50m from Fortitude Valley station entrance and down a flight of stairs. From the outside it looks like one of those old, dodgy places, most of which seem to show porn movies these days. Inside it's actually very pleasant. There's a pool table, a bar, a few booths and, at the back, a reasonably sized space that usually hosts bands. Becuse of the bands, the sound system is excellent, perfact balance and no distortion.

For our $35 we got 2 shows with a 20 minute intermission. The first was a one-girl show. Clever writing and she had an excellent voice. The second show was about The Desperados , three girls out for the night trying to get laid.

Sadly, by the time you read this, they'll be in Victoria heading towards their next location. If you do manage to catch it, spend a little money and a couple of hours. If you're good with adult humour, you'll love it.

The show has been invited to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year, so they're financing the trip with the performances.
